Van Wickle Gates Walkthrough 2021 for New Students

For decades, Brown students have marked the beginning of their academic journey by processing onto campus through the Van Wickle Gates at Opening Convocation. It is through this distinctive tradition that Brown students are welcomed into the community.

Of course, this year’s experience is somewhat different — taking place at the start of spring semester rather than in the fall, and with some students beginning their journey remotely. Nevertheless, President Christina H. Paxson and the rest of the Brown community warmly welcomed students at separate events held in February and March, with an invitation to those who could not attend to participate in a walkthrough at a later date.

For First-Year Students

On Feb. 16, members of the Class of 2024 safely walked through the Van Wickle Gates, symbolizing their official entry into the Brown community.

For Graduate, Medical, Transfer, Visiting and Returning Students

On March 1, roughly 400 other new students proceeded through the gates in the second walkthrough of the 2020-21 academic year.
