Please join us for a “What I Am Thinking About Now” presentation by Dadland Maye, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Africana Studies and the Cogut Institute for the Humanities at Brown University, titled “Anti-Gay Dancehall as a Catalyst for Progressive Norms on Queer Caribbean Sexuality.”

Abstract: The anti-gay aspects of dancehall music symbolize a contradiction—persecution and pleasure for queer Jamaican subjects, gay men in particular. The discourse tensions energized through the intersection of dancehall’s anti-gay manifestations and queer liberation reveal that dancehall’s relationship with queerness epitomizes a mutually beneficial formation. The presentation examines the productively hostile relationship as a clarifier and cultivator of progressive norms on black diasporic identity and queer Caribbean sexuality.
