Dr. Fukuda earned his M.D. / Ph.D. via the MSTP combined degree program from Loma Linda University. The major focus of his Ph.D. was investigating the role of astrocyte network proteins on edema formation in neurovascular trauma under the mentorship of Dr. Jerome Badaut. Dr. Fukuda focused on Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury and Ischemic Stroke as the disease models to study the effects of these astrocytic proteins and the potential therapeutic value in modulating them after these injuries. This work resulted in 12 publications in peer-reviewed journals to date, seven of which are first/co-first author papers.

Since joining the Research Training Program at Brown, Dr. Fukuda is focusing more on clinical research. He is studying various aspects of Therapeutic Neuromodulation such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation including improving clinical efficacy and searching for potential biomarkers. Dr. Fukuda has published one first author paper and a review on this topic since joining Dr. Linda Carpenter’s lab and is currently preparing two papers and a book chapter co-authored with her. He has also published a co-first author paper from his previous lab this year, the work of which he intends to link to some of his current projects he is spearheading. He received a first-place resident poster award at the Brown University Mind Brain Research Day (2019).

From Dr. Fukuda: I have greatly enjoyed my first year in the Brown Psychiatry Residency Program and the opportunities that the R25 funded Research Training Program has provided. All of the research attendings, staff, and team members have been immensely helpful and fun to be around, making the research activities here tremendously enriching. I feel that the clinical aspect of my Residency training has also been enhanced by my research, and in turn the clinical experience and knowledge have helped augment my research, providing a positive synergistic cycle. Overall, I believe that the RTP and the mentorship I am receiving, coupled with the excellent clinical training, is helping me build the groundwork to achieve my career goal of becoming an Academic Psychiatrist.
