On Friday, March 9, 2018, Jeri DeBrohun, Chair of the Department of Classics, was honored at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of New England (CANE) by being awarded the Barlow-Beach Award, CANE’s highest honor bestowed on a member of the association.

Charles Bradshaw, president of CANE, announced that Prof. DeBrohun was selected for this honor “for her scholarship, her relentless work in behalf of our organization, and for her personal qualities that have endeared her to a generation of students, and to so many of us.”  Bradshaw went on to say, “one of CANE’s most compelling assets is the camaraderie members experience, whether they teach in some of New England’s fine colleges and universities, or in the regions’ secondary schools. This merging of university and school educators is… an unusual and distinguishing feature that has been the glue keeping the classics alive and well in New England. Jeri DeBrohun is an excellent example of someone who promotes that spirit of working together on behalf of thousands of New England’s students… [She] promotes an appreciation for both the usefulness and genuine relevance of classical studies, despite the dynamic classroom changes unfolding in the twenty-first century… [Jeri,] You are a consummate professional, and a tireless leader who does what she does with intelligence, with modesty, and with charm. We are all enriched by the work you do every day to bring dignity and purpose to classical studies, especially when your unselfish efforts in behalf of CANE are quite literally, Mirabile Dictu!”
