September is already coming to a close, but the Department of Classics has already been very busy getting back into the swing of things this semester!

The Department of Classics recently held its Opening Reception at The Faculty Club. On Wednesday, September 6th, we gathered as a department to celebrate the start of a new academic year with new and returning faculty, graduate students, and staff members. Both Classics Department members as well as members of other related disciplines came together to talk about how their summers went, to catch up with one another, and to discuss plans for this coming academic year. This year Classics welcomed a new faculty member – Sasha-Mae Eccleston, and two visiting scholars\postdoctoral fellows – Dora Ivaniševic and Lothar Willms.

On Friday, September 15th, graduate students from Classics and from other similar programs also came together for a barbecue in the Classics Mainelli Garden. The graduate students hung out for one last summer celebration before the academic year gets under way. They greeted four new graduate students – Caitlin Fennerty, Isabella Grunberger-Kirsh, Christopher Jotischky-Hull, and Lucy McInerney.

In addition to these two “welcome back” events, the Classics DUG held an Open House for first year Brown students, and the department has already held two lectures this September:

Summer may have gone by quickly, but everyone is happy to be back at Brown and excited about the start of a new academic year.  We look forward to another successful school year!
