Edwin Wong (M.A. ‘07 and author of The Risk Theatre Model of Tragedy: Gambling, Drama, and the Unexpected (2019)) recently had a book chapter, Greek Tragedy, Black Swans, and the Coronavirus: The Consolation of Theatre, published by Salem Press in their 2021 volume Critical Insights: Literature in Times of Crisis, edited by Robert C. Evans. Edwin’s chapter offers a particular critical lens by viewing literary tragedies as “black swan” events, or incidents that at first seem highly improbable but have major consequences.

“My essay looks at how the art form of tragedy – which dramatizes low-probability, high-consequence events – can help us understand the pandemic, which is also a highly improbable event with massive consequences.”
