S4 Summer 2022 GIS Institute

Maxcy Hall, Brown University, Providence, RI 02912

Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences (S4) will offer the next GIS Institute for the Brown community in June 2022. The Institute is open to all Brown graduate students, researchers, staff and faculty. All PhD students completing the institute will have the opportunity to become S4 Fellows, a diverse community of students who have access to all S4 resources and join in S4 events throughout the year.

The Summer 2022 GIS Institute will be held from June 1 – June 10, 2022.

BACKGROUND: The Institute provides participants the opportunity to build and apply GIS and spatial analysis skills that will directly translate to individual research projects, such as dissertations. The Institute will provide hands-on training in two areas:

1. Geographic Information Systems for managing, processing, analyzing, and representing spatial data.

2. Spatial statistics and spatial analysis tools for more in-depth research applications.

The Institute will cover theory and practice through lectures, tutorials, invited speakers, and an applied research project of your choice. The program runs 9:30 am to 5 pm during the first week, with the remaining days allocated to mentored work on individual projects. June 10th will be devoted to project presentations.

Questions about the Institute or the application process for future ones may be directed to S4 Associate Director, Dr. Kevin Mwenda ([email protected]).
