June 22, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] – Participants from 46 countries gathered June 3-16 for the Brown University International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI), organized by Professor of Anthropology and BIARI Director Matthew Gutmann. The annual Institute brings together early-career scholars to address pressing global issues and "promote a just and peaceful world through research, teaching, and public engagement."

PSTC associates have a long history of leadership with BIARI. This year Professor of Economics Glenn Loury co-convened the Institute on "Ethnicity, Conflict, and Inequality in Global Perspective." Professor of Sociology David Lindstromconvened the BIARI beyond Brown in Mexico City in January along with Silvia Giorguli, a PSTC alum and president of El Colegio de México. Professor of Anthropology Daniel Smith is organizing the first African BIARI to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, in January 2018.
