Opportunity Insights is a program of research for which Associate Professor of Economics John Friedman serves as a project manager. Opportunity Insights utilizes big data to identify new pathways to upward mobility. The mission of the team is to develop scalable policy solutions that will empower families to rise out of poverty and achieve better life outcomes. Opportunity Insights aims to achieve this mission by harnessing the power of big data to learn from areas where the American Dream is still thriving. Research areas include education, neighborhoods, and health. Friedman’s work has focused on education, particularly the impacts of teachers on adulthood outcomes and the roles of colleges in intergenerational mobility.
