Research Project

Is housing damage and displacement an explanation for population change in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina?

This research project focuses on housing damage and residential displacement as a mechanism that explains the recomposition of New Orleans’s population in the first four years following Hurricane Katrina. The project uses the American Housing Survey for New Orleans, which follows housing units from 2004 to 2009 and records changes in occupancy, housing unit and resident characteristics, and disaster impacts. This data is only available through a Census Research Data Center to protect residents’ identities.
