Fostering Allyship with Multilingual Writers

The Writing Center is hosting a colloquium series in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Students’ Right to Their Own Language, a landmark document in linguistic justice. As part of this series, graduate students are invited to attend the following professional development workshop: Many multilingual writers encounter daily tensions when it comes to using different languages and writing techniques from their own culture while being taught the Western way of writing. Traditional teaching methods that prioritize a single form of English can reinforce colonial structures and limit the voices of multilingual writers. This workshop will introduce decolonizing concepts and strategies that can foster allyship with multilingual writers in a classroom and tutoring setting. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Joy Shuyuan Liu, Assistant Director of English Language Support at the Sheridan Center. Space is limited; register by November 10. Lunch will be provided for in-person participants.
