Are you an instructor interested in online discussions for your course? Join experts from the Sheridan Center’s Digital Learning & Design team for a 50-minute workshop where we compare Brown’s available platforms and review best practices for engaging students in productive online discussions. Platforms to be compared include Canvas, Ed Discussion, and Harmonize. Participants will leave the workshop better able to select and implement a platform for their course discussion needs. Are you interested in applying to Graduate School? Join SACNAS for an informational session about the STEM graduate school application process. We will discuss preparing application components (i.e personal statement, transcripts, recommendation letters, etc.) and current graduate students will share their experiences with the application process. Workshop: Assignments Exchange

Learning about a colleague’s favorite assignment is a great way to discover new approaches to use with your own students. In this interactive online workshop, you will have the opportunity to speak with colleagues about their assignment, and share insights about your own approach. Please come ready to share an assignment you’re working on: we welcome assignments, projects, or exam questions from any discipline and at any stage, from early brainstorming to finished product. The workshop will offer plenty of time for meaningful discussion in pairs, as well as more general conversation. Please register to receive the zoom link.

Panel: Rethinking Assignments Across Disciplines

Over the past year, instructors have inspired one another with their innovative approaches to teaching through the pandemic. Join a conversation with faculty across disciplines about creative assignments from the past year. Panelists will include Professors Toni-Marie Achilli (Biological Sciences), R. Iris Bahar (Engineering and Computer Science), and Sheila Bonde and Lindsay Caplan (History of Art and Architecture). These faculty will speak about their favorite transformations to assignments or exams over the past year, and how they are thinking about these assessments going forward, followed by an audience Q&A. Writing with Art

In this interactive, live Zoom workshop, we will explore ways to use art to teach writing. Using images from the RISD Museum’s online collection, we’ll consider strategies to help guide the student writing process in a variety of contexts, including ekphrastic and creative writing, generative brainstorming, and crafting descriptive prose for academic writing. This session is part of the Sheridan Center-RISD Museum Collaborative workshop series and will be led by Jessica Metzler, Sheridan Center Senior Associate Director.
