How can teaching with objects enhance students' observational and analytical skills? How can design objects inspire close attention to cultural contexts and the material culture we live in? Investigate ways the RISD Museum serves as a classroom of primary sources. Participants look closely at an object with museum educator Jackie Delamatre (Brown '02), adjunct assistant professor in Public Humanities at Brown, and reflect on how similar strategies can be applied in their courses.

The goal of this workshop is to provide new instructors with ideas about how they can prepare and plan for their roles as instructors, including strategies for planning classes and engaging students, and suggestions for ways to use student feedback to become more effective teachers.

The Sheridan Teaching Seminar lecture on How We Learn will be held on November 30th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Salomon 001 with a discussion following. The lecture is open to the Brown and RISD community. In this interactive lecture, Shawn Nordell, (Sheridan Center) will discuss recent research on learning and present strategies that improve learning and retention. Attendees will use this to create an interactive student learning experience for their teaching.
