Facilitating Controversial Discussions

Sheridan Center for Teaching & Learning

Controversial discussions -- planned and unanticipated -- raise a number of challenging dynamics in the classroom. This session spotlights Brown faculty and their approaches to controversial discussions, with opportunities for participants to engage in some strategies and apply to critical incidents. This session will be co-facilitated by Matt Guterl (Africana Studies and American Studies), Björn Sandstede (Applied Math), Victoria Smith (Hispanic Studies), and Mary Wright (Sheridan). This workshop is open to junior faculty, lecturers and postdoctoral scholars.

Planning a Teaching Demonstration for the Academic Job Search

Sheridan Center for Teaching & Learning

Some academic interviews now require a teaching presentation or demonstration as an indicator of instructional effectiveness. In this interactive session, we will discuss the range of formats a teaching demonstration can take, as well as questions to ask your interviewers beforehand. Workshop activities will help participants to construct a plan for a teaching demonstration, which can be tailored to different institutional and disciplinary settings. This workshop will be facilitated by Mary Wright, Director of the Sheridan Center.

How to Embed an International Component in a Course and Get Funding for It

Sheridan Center for Teaching & Learning

The Global Experiential Learning and Teaching (GELT) grant program provides funds for advanced undergraduate seminars that embed an international travel component. Travel may take place prior to, during, or at the end of the course, or may be offered as a destination course during Brown’s Wintersession. The GELT program offers two forms of support: a development grant (up to $4,000) to design the travel component and an implementation grant (up to $35,000) to run the course, which includes student and faculty travel, accommodations, and other expenses.
