Planning a Teaching Demonstration for the Academic Job Search

Some academic interviews now require a teaching presentation or demonstration as an indicator of instructional effectiveness. In this interactive session, we will discuss the range of formats a teaching demonstration can take, as well as questions to ask your interviewers beforehand. Workshop activities will help participants to construct a plan for a teaching demonstration, which can be tailored to different institutional and disciplinary settings. This workshop will be facilitated by Mary Wright, Director of the Sheridan Center.

Implementing Writing Groups to Cultivate a Community of Writers in Your Classroom

Research shows that students who participate in peer response groups not only produce better writing but also demonstrate improved self-evaluative capabilities, a more nuanced understanding of audience, increased motivation and decreased anxiety surrounding writing tasks, and also demonstrate more positive attitudes toward writing generally.

Scaffolding Assignments to Improve Student Learning

Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning

In this workshop, facilitated by Sheridan Associate Director Jessica Metzler, participants will explore strategies for designing assignments that improve student learning by breaking down complex tasks into smaller components, allowing instructors to monitor and offer feedback on student progress.

English Language Learning: Academic Writing Series

This series focuses on skills needed for clear writing in the U.S. academic context. This semester workshops will focus on sentence-level syntax, grammatical structures, and word choices for writing at the college and graduate levels. The five-part workshop series will be held on 2/12, 2/26, 3/12, 4/2, and 4/16.
