New TA Orientation to Teaching at Brown

New TA Orientation to Teaching at Brown features a graduate student panel and hands-on workshops to help graduate TAs prepare for the first days of class, practice approaches to responding to student writing, and learn strategies for grading in quantitative courses. Light refreshments will be served.

Leading a First Readings Discussion: A Workshop for Facilitators

This workshop will equip First Readings seminar leaders with tools and strategies to facilitate thoughtful and productive discussion. Participants will learn techniques for creating a seminar environment conducive to discussion and develop strategies for starting, sustaining, and concluding a book discussion. This workshop will be offered twice and is appropriate for faculty and staff who will be facilitating a First Readings seminar. Undergraduate co-facilitators are also welcome to attend this session by invitation. Please register

Facilitating Controversial Discussions

Controversial discussions -- planned and unanticipated -- raise a number of challenging dynamics in the classroom. This session spotlights Brown faculty and their approaches to controversial discussions, with opportunities for participants to engage in some strategies and apply to critical incidents. This session will be co-facilitated by Matt Guterl (Africana Studies and American Studies), Björn Sandstede (Applied Math), Victoria Smith (Hispanic Studies), and Mary Wright (Sheridan). This workshop is open to junior faculty, lecturers and postdoctoral scholars.
